🌍🌏 Great crested grebe (Podiceps cristatus)

The great crested grebe is a medium-sized water bird native to Europe, Asia, and parts of Africa and Australia. It is known for its elegant appearance, intricate courtship displays, and adaptability to various freshwater environments. During the breeding season, it displays a distinctive black crest on its head, which gives it its name. Its body has a white belly and neck, with the upperparts being dark brown or black. The eyes are red. Outside the breeding season, the crest is less prominent, and the overall plumage appears more muted. Three subspecies are recognised.

Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1)

Saw some Western Grebe feeding/parenting behavior today at the Bill Williams NWR near Parker, Arizona. The adult caught a fish, then delivered it to a very excited juvenile that was able to choke it down.
