#leaflitter

Gifts that keep on giving, twigs and branches and neighbors should eventually be chopped into short pieces to hopefully serve to make a sort of leaf-littered yard like a forest floor... In the meantime moving the pile every few months makes for some sort of feast.. the humus(!?) smelled nice, reminded me of _Dirt! The Ecstatic Skin of the Earth_...

Visible here is a #Julida #diplopode, a taxon with ca 750 species worldwide. #Diplopods are important decomposers of #deadwood or #leaflitter; their high food requirements and corresponding excrements make them important #humusproducers. Despite the name #millipedes, almost all diplopods have no more than 750 #legs. An exception is #Eumillipes #persephone (Siphonotidae) described by P. E.Mark et al.(2021),with 1,306 legs.

Leaf Litter
"The piles of leaves that have formed actually serve to create winter homes for many different species of caterpillars and pupae where they spend the colder months safe from freezing temperatures and predators."

The #woodlouse #Oniscus #asellus (Oniscidae) is originally distributed in Western #Europe, but today one of the most common isopods in #CentralEurope, occuring e g. in dead wood or #leaflitter and is neozoon in North America. D. T. Bilton (2008), names two morphologically/ecologically different #subspecies, O. asellus asellus and O. asellus #occidentalis.

#Leaflitter increases #biodiversity in yards, parks....#birds that forage on the ground have plenty to eat. My yard has no grass, is full of trees, leaves and plants that I do not cut back in winter. They all provide #habitat, texture, contrast and color. Use black oil sunflower and safflower at your feeders. High quality seed (Scarlett) w lots of nutrition. Enjoy winter, help feed the birds, other critters too fehttps://blog.mybirdbuddy.com/post/leave-leaves-alone-for-boosted-backyard-diversity

A new look at decades of data from #MuseumCollections & #surveys of #LeafLitter #ants in #Florida #reveals a steady #decline in #NativeAnts , #simultaneous #increase in #nonNative ants—even in #protected natural areas of the state, researchers report.
#Reported in the journal Current #Biology , the findings point to a potential future devoid of native ants, the #researchers said.
