In a recent study published in Cell Metabolism, a research paper provides the first evidence that sperm microRNAs act as carriers of epigenetic information, enabling the intergenerational transmission of paternal exercise capacity and metabolic health, thereby exerting profound effects on offspring development.

The collaborative research team was led by Chen-Yu Zhang, Xi Chen, and Di-Jun Chen from Nanjing University, together with Tao Zhang from Nanjing Medical University, titled "Paternal exercise confers endurance capacity to offspring through sperm microRNAs."

Throughout evolutionary history, exercise capacity has been fundamental to human survival, with our ancestors relying on sustained physical performance for hunting, migration, and predator evasion. However, with the advent of modern society, human lifestyles have undergone dramatic changes. Sedentary behavior and physical inactivity have become the norm, making exercise seem less essential for survival.Yet, a growing body of research reveals that the biological benefits of exercise continue to profoundly influence human health. Exercise not only enhances individual physical fitness and metabolic profiles—reducing the risk of chronic diseases—but also exerts deeper effects on the physiological and metabolic characteristics of future generations. Nevertheless, the mechanisms through which paternal exercise influences offspring phenotypes remain poorly understood.

In this study, the authors demonstrate that offspring sired by exercise-trained fathers exhibit intrinsic exercise adaptability and improved metabolic parameters compared to those from sedentary fathers. Similarly, offspring of transgenic mice with muscle-specific overexpression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ coactivator-1α (PGC-1α)—a key enhancer of mitochondrial function—also show improved endurance and metabolic traits, even in the absence of the inherited PGC-1α transgene.

Fortan hielten Antidepressiva sie über Wasser, aber Freude am Leben fand sie nicht: «Ich lebte ein Leben auf Null. Es gab keine Tiefs, aber auch keine Hochs mehr, ich fühlte mich innerlich tot.»

Overall, the researchers found that the mean amount of methylation varies greatly between tissues, ranging from 35% in the cervix, through to 48% in skin, 51% in muscle, 53% in the heart, 57% in the stomach and up to 63% in the retina.

" This format is useful for base-resolution methylation data generated by bisulfite sequencing or direct methylation detection methods such as long-read sequencing. By including both methylation level and support (coverage), bedMethyl provides a detailed view of methylation across the genome."

I love the work they're doing with slow5/blow5 open spec for ONT raw data, and archive all internal reads using them. Really need to sit down and test this one out with my #archaea raw data!

In other news due to #methylation issues I need to intentionally add more folate rich foods which means beans 🫘 are going back in my diet, slowly. I tolerate beans very well and find that black beans improve my motility and BM experience better than lettuce or zucchini. #MCAS
