From 15.5-15 Kya rapid warming enabled 'humans to rapidly repopulate the northwest margins of Europe (>50° N and encompassing the area of Britain, Ireland, the surrounding islands and the North Sea basin) after regional abandonment during the Last Glacial Maximum...'

Very interesting #demographic model for historic #African populations reaching back 74,000 years -- that is before ancestors of everyone today began moving out of Africa. This factors in #malaria risk as contributing to movements and success of populations. Even that long ago, even with #huntergatherers.

"Our results show that humans strongly avoided or were unsuccessful in potential malaria hotspots. The effects of these choices shaped human demography for the last 74 kya, and likely much earlier, by fragmenting human societies over time and contributing to the formation of modern population structure."

The first paper for our paper club is this recent one from McKay et al., presenting a thorough investigation of the (supposed?) 4.2 ka event. I'd read it when it was published, but just went through again in more detail, and what a good paper. Robust stats (of course, from this group), and they do a really nice job of building the case. I hope the group enjoys it!

🔴 🇦🇺 Highest ocean heat in four centuries places Great Barrier Reef in danger

Climate model analysis confirms that human influence on the climate system is responsible for the rapid warming in recent decades. This attribution, together with the recent ocean temperature extremes, post-1900 warming trend and observed mass coral bleaching, shows that the existential threat to the GBR ecosystem from anthropogenic climate change is now realized.

A full on but successful 4 days on the XFM beamline at the Ausgralian Synchrotron. We mixed things up this time by running some tree cores for Casey's PhD work - lots of cool features showing up! We also mapped a bunch of stalagmites, including some pilot data for my next job. 74 elemental maps made, a new record for us!

Box of rocks arrived for me today 😍 we will be taking these beauties to the Aus Synchrotron next month to get an idea if they might be suitable for #palaeofire research. Happily, these were collected by a friend of mine for her PhD, which means a potential collaboration with a friend (yay!), and the reuse of old samples rather than collecting new (double yay!).

I've said this a few times now, but, pending disaster, today is my last day of labwork for this postdoc! I've got 4 mm of sample to mill (40 samples!). This speleothem grew during the early Holocene before stopping, and starting again in the 1930s. I'm very excited to see the stable isotope data approaching this hiatus!

The listening entertainment for the day is the Hobbit, as read by Andy Serkis. Libraries are the best 💚

Cool new cave research out today in #Nature! Weij et al. find that in southern Australia glacial periods tend to be moist, contrary to the currently held view that glacial periods are cool and dry in the subtropics.

Neat work from Rieneke and a bunch of Aussie quaternarists!
