How To Identify Black #AshTrees: A Beginner's Guide.

May 29, 2023

Difficulty - Advanced

by Rob Smith Rob Smith

Ash trees are a popular choice for landscaping and are commonly found in parks, streets, and in backyards. But not all ash trees are the same. If you are trying to identify a black ash tree, you need to know what sets it apart from other species of ash trees.

These trees are Black Poplars, possibly hybrids. Notice how they all have a large lower branch facing southwest. I’ve heard this might be a distinctive feature of native Black Poplars, not hybrids.

Can this single feature be enough to identify them as native?

Very rare to see these cultivated on the island. This was a delightful sight. It's quite large, with many #PurpleCones all over it.

#PiceaPurpurea aka #PurpleConeSpruce. It's a #spruce #tree native to #China. It's been cultivated here & is a beautiful tree for #landscaping.

Any ideas? I think it might be an ash.

Location is in zone 6b in western US.

Calling all you clever folk out there for some identification help.

We think this is a Wych Elm, or a hazel - but either way, we have never seen this coloration on either species before.

Thoughts?

I don't know what our front #flowering #tree is - can someone help me with this #TreeIdentification ? Multiple hummingbirds have nested for years in this tree - it's their fave tree to nest in. It's been on property for ages - I'm guessing it's at least 80-90 yrs old. Very healthy. Reminds me of crabapples but produces no fruits - only flowers.

While at a new-to-us lake this morning, I was able to test out Seek to identify some trees that we’ve never seen before.

The bark on the American Persimmon tree is so fun. It’s like little dots were attached to the trunk one by one.

The bark on the Shagbark Hickory is also unique and truly lives up to its name.

ABOUT Diospyros virginiana is a persimmon species commonly called the American persimmon, common persimmon, eastern persimmon, "simmon", "possumwood", "possum apples", or "sugar-plum". It ranges from southern Connecticut/Long Island to Florida, and west to Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Kansas, and lowa. The tree grows wild but has been cultivated for its fruit and wood since prehistoric times by Native Americans. (Source: Wikipedia)ABOUT Carya ovata, the shagbark hickory, is a common hickory in the Eastern United States and southeast Canada. It is a large, deciduous tree, growing well over 100 ft (30 m) tall, and can live more than 350 years. The tallest measured shagbark, located in Savage Gulf, Tennessee, is over 150 ft (46 m) tall. Mature shagbarks are easy to recognize because, as their name implies, they have shaggy bark. This characteristic is, however, only found on mature trees; young specimens... (Source: Wikinedia)

My first #ThickTrunkTuesday post! I don't think I framed the shot correctly for scale, and I'm terrible at estimating distances, but this is an absolute unit. It'd take two people with arms outstretched to get around the base. I'd be interested if anyone can ID the tree; I'd love to be better at #TreeIdentification!

A very large tree with both lighter birch-like bark and darker bark rising into a cloudy sky. The tree is knottier towards the bottom and splits into several thick branches towards the top; all its leaves are gone. In the background, the corner of a red brick building and the leaves of another tree are visible.

There are quite a few of these beauties near the bay shore where I live. I see them in pairs or small groups and can’t help bet wonder if they’re highly social #introverts like me. Edit: I posted this without ID, but stone pine (Pinus pinea) has been suggested by @AnnabelSherwood and I think that's right.

Two large pine trees, wider than they are tall, the nearer one partially obscuring the rear one that peeks out on the left side. The front branches of the front tree nearly touch the ground. The canopy of each tree is cloud shaped, with an upward sweep to the branches, and upward. The sky is deep blue, streaked with white clouds. The foreground is asphalt.

Mastodon, help me identify a tree from my childhood memories.

In Haines City FL, my great grandmother had a large tree in her back yard that had dark purple/black berries, and waxy pointed spade leaves that smelled like menthol when you broke them.
