#India - Farmers devastated after 80% of key crops are wiped out — here's what happened

Story by Tina Deines, February 4, 2026

"#TomatoFarmers in one region in India are struggling after their crops were hit hard by #pests and #climatic factors.

What's happening?

"The Pioneer reported on the challenging growing season for farmers around the town of #Gaulapar in northern India, an area that is known for tomato production. According to growers there, about 80% of their cultivated tomatoes have been damaged by pests.

"The publication also lists '#ClimaticFactors' as a challenge for tomato farmers. For one, young tomato plants suffered damage in the initial phase of cultivation due to #HighTemperatures during the planting season.

Why is this crop damage concerning?

"According to the publication, the drop in tomato yields has led to surging prices at the market, affecting consumers. While some farmers are benefitting from higher prices, most are suffering due to the crop damage they've endured.

"This is yet the latest example of the struggles facing food producers worldwide and the cascading impacts they have on consumers.

"One recent study tied recent dramatic price increases in staple foods to rising global temperatures, which are leading to prolonged droughts, more severe heat waves, unpredictable precipitation patterns, and other severe weather. For instance, #Malaysians are facing soaring prices at the supermarket after a heavy #monsoon season wiped out a number of local #crops."

Agriculture currently accounts for 16.6% of GDP and employs more than a third of Cambodia's workforce. The sector plays an important role in ensuring national food security and has been growing steadily in recent years thanks to the kingdom's focus on exports. However, more active expansion of Cambodia's agriculture is hampered by natural constraints.

Hybrid #megapests evolving in #Brazil are a threat to #crops worldwide

Two extremely damaging crop pests have interbred to create hybrids resistant to more than one #pesticide that could cause serious problems in many countries

By Michael Le Page
23 January 2026

"It was thought that H. armigera and H. zea couldn’t interbreed, but in 2018 genetic analysis revealed a few hybrids between the species. Jiggins and his colleagues have now analysed the genome of nearly 1000 moths collected in Brazil over the past decade.

"They found that a third of H. armigera now carry genes providing resistance to the Bt toxin – and they got these genes from H. zea. Bt maize was first introduced in North America in the 1990s, where some H. zea strains evolved resistance. These resistance genes seem to have spread to South America and now crossed species. As yet, the hybrid H. armigera haven’t been a major problem, says Jiggins, but that could change as resistance spreads.

"The transfer has gone both ways – nearly all H. zea in Brazil now have a gene conferring resistance to a class of insecticides called pyrethroids that was acquired from H. armigera. 'We’re just sort of blown away by how rapidly it’s happened,' says Jiggins.

" 'With global connectivity and climate change together lowering barriers to species’ range expansions, such megapests are likely to be an increasing global problem, as is the escalating rate of biological invasions more generally,' says Angela McGaughran at the University of Waikato in New Zealand."

India is one of the world's largest producers of agricultural products. Almost half of the country's population is employed in the agricultural sector, which accounts for approximately 16.4% of GDP.

Kazakhstan is a country with significant agricultural potential, which remains largely untapped. This sector accounts for about 3.9% of GDP and 12.1% of the country's employment. Kazakhstan has one of the most extensive agricultural areas in the world, exceeding 2 mln km2. At the same time, the country experiences an acute shortage of water for irrigation due to the predominance of arid lands

War Over a #Weedkiller Might Be Headed to the #SupremeCourt
#Bayer has asked justices to decide whether federal law shields company from lawsuits over its #Roundup #herbicide and #cancer. Democrats and MAHA activists aren’t happy.
Bayer’s Supreme Court petition is latest chapter in yearslong controversy over Roundup, developed by #Monsanto in 1970s as revolutionary weedkiller. Pesticide allows #GMO #crops to grow unimpeded while killing most weeds.

Deadly #varroa #mite threatens half of Canberra’s #beehives.

The varroa mite, is expected to wipe out half of the #ACT's 6,000 #bee hives within two years, putting local #fruit & #vegetable #crops at #risk.

Varroa mites are 1 to 2 millimetre-long parasites that attach to honey bees, eventually killing the bees and their colonies.

The ACT's first infestation was found in a hive in Kowen in April this year. #auspol #apiarist #BeeKeepers

If you’re in North America enjoying fresh strawberries between now* and like March, check the package to see if it says grown in Florida.

If it is, my neighbours say de nada, you’re welcome, and I say #fuckICE. 🍓

*The picking of the early crops has been on for a few weeks now, but by the time we get to the peak in February it will smell like strawberry shortcakes whenever I go outside. 🤤 #Food #Crops
