At some point #CUPS stopped being able to detect the two-sided printing support in my printer. Same printer, used to work just fine, doesn't work anymore.
Fortunately I have an old PPD file saved from before the bug emerged, so I can replace the broken PPD file with that one after adding the printer to restore double-sided printing support.

I have an ink tank printer that does not support IPP. It supports Microsoft's WSD. (I didn't know this when I bought it or I'd have bought a model from the same line that did support IPP, for a negligible higher price.)

This means I can't print wirelessly directly from Linux or Android. Today I thought "maybe there's some software that translates IPP to WSD. I could create a container to launch when I want to print something using IPP."

I did some digging and found nothing. I'm also a bit shocked CUPS does not support WSD while SANE (for scanning) does.

I feel like implementing WSD for CUPS or just a IPP to WSD translation service. But I have other projects I want to finish right now... Maybe someday. Or maybe someone else will do it.

I have originally reported this one. See the answers of CUPS author Michael Sweet. He has developed primarily under Mac OS (BSD-based) which uses mdnsresponder (Not Avahi as in Linux) where the problem does not occur, seems in CUPS' Avahi support.

Set as milestone for first CUPS 2.5.x release.

1. Bought a #printer.

4. Every machine detected it instantly—without me doing anything else. 😎

However, I wonder why I see my fancy new printer for @loveyoumore twice, on all of my #archlinux #gnome computers (server, two laptops, and the studio workstation). 🤔

@gwynnion I hope this post helps. But, given that you are saying #CUPS is running, then a likely re-install of printer drivers and maybe even #CUPS is needed. The post has the relevant commands for checking on CUPS status and restarting CUPS.

Ist denn schon etwas bekannt über den mysteriösen #CUPS NetzwerkStreik unter #Mint?

I found the culprit: Update #cups to cups-2.4.7-1.2ubuntu7.7 on #linuxmint and probably #ubuntu as well breaks printing completely. It doesn't matter whether it's a network or locally connected printer.
Solution: downgrade to 2.4.7-1.2ubuntu7 (and probably to the previous version 2.4.7-1.2ubuntu7.4) will fix it.

A security update to CUPS broke printing in Linux Mint 21.3 in 2025, AKA the year of the Linux desktop. Yargh !

This is the first time that I've ever actually restored a Timeshift backup, and the sonofabitch just worked. Held back the CUPS update in Update Manager and boom, problem solved (for now).

I may have also been having a #LinuxMint issue. It appears my #CUPS service was being disabled every time it tried to start because the /etc/cups/cupsd.conf file was throwing an error when CUPS attempted to start. I replaced cupsd.conf with the default version of cupsd.conf, so CUPS starts and I see a print queue again.

The printer is not seeing the WIFI though, which is the main issue. The printer has a TS-02 error, basically "I don't see the WIFI router with the specified SSID."
