I love KDE software... but I really really think my relationship with #Kmail is over.
It's been too many times that randomly my emails are not sent, no matter what I try. And things are silently unsent on the outbox. Until magically 2 or 3 days later, it works again.
The thing that hurts the most is: there is no warning, there is no red blasting window saying "hey, we found a problem". Not a trace of any error code. Everything's normal.
I've got a problem with #KDE #KMail 6.3.3 (24.12.3)
When I trash / send a message, KMail is putting it in the local folders instead of the IMAP folders.
I have already selected the right Sent/Drafts/Templates in the Advanced configuration for each of my 2 Identifies.
I have already selected the right Trash folder in the Advanced configuration for the Receiving (IMAP) Account.

I'm not sure if it is related, but another symptom I have is that when I right-click a message and highlight the "Move message to..." or "Copy message to..." items, instead of opening a submenu, the whole popup closes. Maybe folders are subtly broken in a weird way?

In #KDE #KMail hat das Versenden und Empfangen von E-Mails problemlos funktioniert. Heute Versenden fehlgeschlagen, Zugriff verweigert.
Grund, in den Einstellungen zum SMTP war der Port plötzlich 465 und nicht wie zuvor 587 (submission). Wie kommt man auf solche Ideen bestehende Einstellungen mit oder ohne Update zu ändern (die Zugangsdaten für das Login waren ja auch noch da).
Naja egal, man braucht sich halt nicht mehr wundern oder ärgern warum so viele bei #Microsoft oder #Apple kaufen.
Si usáis KMail como cliente de correo, y queréis que los mensajes de una determinada cuenta aparezcan en un color diferente en la lista de mensajes (para diferenciar los personales de los de trabajo, por ejemplo), este es un buen método:

If you are using #archlinux, think twice before updgrading (mariadb). Upgrading to v. 12.1.2 will break #akonadi, and thereby #kmail, #kontact, #korganizer etc.
The cause of this is not kmail or akonadi but mariadb. If you experience this, you can downgrade mariadb packages using pacman -U and point it to packages in /var/cache/pacman/pkg/ - the packages mariadb, mariadb-libs and mariadb-clients must be downgraded, adding them on one line is best.
UPDATE I have NOT got this working safely yet.
If you were hit
* close any kdepim app - kmail, kontact, korganizer, kaddressbook, merkuro or other
* stop akonadi - $ akonadictl stop
* remove ALL akonadi related dat from ~/.local and ~/.config. ALL.
* I removed all config, state and app data for kdepim apps as well, before kmail would start cleanly
Repeat until kdepim apps starts cleanly
I've wanted to love KMail for so many years, but every time I try it, it's just missing so much stuff that I use daily. Labels. Conversations view. Filters.
I'm curious how Merkuro (sp?) is going. It was a rather nice calendar app that apparently added email, so there's hope there.
For the moment though I'm stuck on Thunderbird even if it maddeningly and mystifyingly chooses to not let you use filters outside of the root email folder.
I can't believe that FOSS / Linux actually nailed video editing and gaming -two areas once thought impossible - before getting a decent email app.
I wonder whatever happened to KDE Raven?
@rainer Also... wenn man nicht zu exotisches Gebimsel drauftütert, funktioniert so'n Rolling Release wie #OpenSUSE 's #Tumbleweed inzwischen wunderbar. Ich nutze es wohl seit dessen Anbeginn - zuerst war's wirklich manchmal frickelig. Aber inzwischen hab ich gar kein Theater mehr. Im Gegenteil. Und selbst mein "gekauftes" #VuesScanPro läuft mit meinen schon immer bockigen Scannertreibern (Epson) super und ohne jeden Ärger.
Allein, #Kmail bzw. #Akonadi war mitunter etwas "schwierig". Da bockte Kmail nach nem Update schonmal. Allerdings, wenn nicht am Tag drauf, dann am übernächsten war das entsprechende Update da und alles wieder gut - ohne eigenes Nachschrauben.
Mittlerweile empfehle ich es meinen Freunden oder helfe bei der ersten Installation. Danach macht es auch den "Neulingen" gleich spaß. Bis jetzt, jedenfalls. :smile:

Ok, so I was looking for a good FOSS desktop email client for my GPD MicroPC 2 running CachyOS.
I wanted something lighter than Thunderbird, and as I’m running KDE Plasma 6 I choose KMail.
WHAT THE HELL IS THAT?
After fiddling for 15 min I was still unable to connect to my IMAP server. It’s 2025 guys, any email client I cannot setup in less than a minute is dead and should not exists.
I’m not writing this because I feel entitled or important or because my time is so precious. I’m writing this because I’m a senior BSD/Linux sysadmin, with +20 years in the field of email servers / email admin & support. I’m very aware of «what’s going on» under the hood and still, I was unable to make it work. I can literally use openssl s_client to connect to my server, where KMail fails hard.
Eventually I’ve installed Thunderbird, in less than 60 sec I got mail synching. The longest step was to retrieve IMAP password from Bitwarden.
So, does anyone actually like KMail? I *want* to like it, but many of the UX choices leave me baffled. Is there some secret magic I'm missing? Is there a Linux mail client folks actually enjoy using?

As an avid user of #KMail, #KOrganizer and #Zanshin, I have (quite) some feedback and bug reports to provide. But whenever I try to, it seems to end up in the void.
I think a first step would be concentrate on the number of communication channels that devs can actually manage. For both their sanity and the users’.

It's the small things that you notice.
In #Debian13 I've noticed that the patience solving engine in #kpat is a lot better. #rawtherapee knows how to read the #EXIF data from a #Canon #CR3 file.
I know there are thousands and thousands of other changes, but it's odd what you notice.
The #Konsole profile selector still doesn't work and #kmail refuses to start on the screen I want it to, but I can live with that.
@aesthr FWIW #kmail lets you configure this. you can dectivate it or define after how many seconds a mail should be marked as read. kmail sure has its issues (one is called akonadi...) but i always loved it for its excellent out-of-the-box PGP support
