🌄Atacama Desert: Nematodes thrive in extreme conditions
A new study reveals that even under harsh and extremely dry conditions, stable and surprisingly diverse soil communities exist. An international team led by researchers from the University of Cologne investigated tiny nematodes in the Chilean Atacama Desert.

Mastodon can be a great source of inspirations! Thanks to @ak_text post about #SlowLooking I discovered a buzzword important for #nature, and every #museum and #gallery.

I show you how to do it and why a woodlouse under a stone can be as interesting as an ancient artefact behind glass:

🧵 4/ And here, I present the lost and missed species of my childhood: tiny shelled #snails. They live where woodlice feel at home and are always found under stones or lettuce leaves, never on bare soil. They seem to move around at night. No idea what species they are!
They are beautiful and work hard producing the stuff that nourishes the soil. And later us by plants!

Bad quality: I have only my mobile phone.

At least 5 beautiful snails on wet dark soil beside some parts of degrading green salad. They are perfectly round and quite flat. The spiral has a banded pattern of beige and brown. A cone-shaped grey snail lies next to a piece of rotting wood in the top right corner. This species has become particularly rare in recent years.Macro of one of the round snails (10x) showing the beige-brown pattern. They are nearly translucent.Normal focus on the soil with snails, 5 are round, beside a piece of rotten wood 2 cone snails, some rotting salad. The photo shows that soil life needs organic biodiversity instead of artificial peat soils from the supermarket. The more plant parts that rot, the better. You can encourage this by not tidying up your garden too much! The soil life will thank you by producing lots of humus.Another place of humid dark soil with one of the round snails showing the dimensions with some plant stems and a yellow skin of a tomato piece. The snails are not bigger than 3 mm (diameter). The tomato was completely eaten by woodlice and other soil life. I could see that these tiny animals often wait for fungi and mould growing on rotting plants. Especially the woodlice babies and nematodes like to feed on these parts.

🧵 1/ My first school room in #nature was a loose rock in a dry stone wall: cronenburg.net/naturematchcuts

For many years I missed some species of that #soilLife until I built a box for making photos. Home to #woodlice and their roommates to show people the adventures happening in #compost and being able to photograph better. At irregular intervals, I'll take you on a tour, as for all things nature without #CW.*

Inside a brown flower box: a big part is covered with dead chickweed plants Under these plants I place fresh food like salad, tomate, apple or potato peels. Next to it a mix of flat stones, salad and a tomato slice. The flower box is placed in absolute shade (I open a shutter for photographing) and kept humid.
It is home to soil life, similar to that found in compost heaps. Because space is limited, I have to keep adding soil and releasing some of the soil onto the compost heap, otherwise the animals reproduce so rapidly that some of them become cannibalistic. The right part of the flower box showing the stones, salad, a tomato slice and some chickweed seedlings. The stones are placed loosely layered for giving place to the animals. And I don't disturb too much when I lift one up to take a photo of the life underneath it.

Water Vapor

Water vapor is an invisible, airborne form of H₂O water that is in the gaseous state.

2 × H hydrogen + 1 × O oxygen
= H-O-H = H₂O water

H hydrogen and O oxygen in the periodic table:
(periodic table)
¹H: period (row) 1, group (column) 1, s-block
⁸O: period (row) 2, group (column) 16, p-block

Water vapor is created usually when liquid water evaporates or boils, or less commonly when solid ice sublimes.

When water vapor condenses to liquid water, it forms droplets that create dew, clouds, fog, mist, drizzle and rain in the air.

When water vapor deposits to solid ice, it forms crystals that create ice clouds, ice fog, frost, snow, ice pellets, graupel and hail in the air.

#Rewild the #soil: The largest urban #rewilding project is going underground nhm.ac.uk/discover/news/2024/a

"The project is happening on an old #golf course... decades of intensive management of the #parkland has taken its toll on #SoilLife... The first stage of this project has already started. The team have allowed large parts of the once manicured greens to grow long and shaggy, whilst the hollows of the old bunkers are beginning to provide protection for the #plants able to grow in the sand."

A perfect day for exploring #mosstodon - sunny and extremely humid. Look at this luxury scyscraper for soil life! My tip: If you see old tree stumps like this, take a magnifying glass with you! Without, I watched a tiny cobweb studded with diamonds and a rodent's borehole.
