I had an excellent Anarchist Day!

I did anarchist snow shoveling at the bus stop this morning. Even put down some de-ice salt.

Then I did some anarchist Tech support and put Linux on a friends laptop. It was stuck in a Windows 10 update doom loop. I put Ubuntu Mate on it for her and had her pick the desktop layout and backgrounds she liked and she was absolutely thrilled. Now she can move forward on her GED online classes and listen to music and watch videos again.

So I spent an hour stripping down this iMac I bought for my son so I could do an 8 > 16gb RAM upgrade. Turns out the bloody RAM is soldered onto the board on this version, despite the listing saying it was compatible with this model. 🤦🏼‍♂️
Ah well, it's running #UbuntuMate on a fresh SSD like a dream and Minecraft gets ~60 FPS. That's all he cares about.

@zquestz published an article on Gtk theming which I found fascinating. It is an overview of the kind of things you have to consider when trying to create your own theme for #Linux . He fusses over the little details that are very important when doing UI/UX design properly. He also made sure the themes worked properly on various Gtk desktop environments, including Cinnamon, MATE, and Xfce (three of the best DEs, in my humble opinion).

He also mentions the qt6gtk2 plugin for Qt which I did not know about. It translates Gtk themes to Qt themes so all of your applications, whether they use Gtk or Qt, have the correct theme. This is extremely useful since the impedance mismatch between Qt and Gtk is the biggest source of UI/UX inconsistencies in Linux apps.

• Robert kwam op bezoek om te kijken wat wij doen. Hij gaf ook een demo van #Kubuntu op zijn laptop. Volgende keer komt hij weer om klanten te kunnen helpen!
  
• Annabelle bracht een vreselijk trage ASUS laptop. Het duurde tientallen minuten totdat het opgestart was. Wij haalden eerst de harde schijf eruit, maar die bleek helemaal goed. We vermoedden dat deze laptop deel was van een botnet, want ook na het opstarten ratelde de harde schijf maar door. Bezig bitcoins te genereren?? Het kostte grote moeite het in de BIOS te krijgen, maar toen dat lukte bootten wij  vanaf de USB-stick en even later draaide Debian Gnome. Het was verrassend hoe vlot en soepel dit systeem nu bleek te zijn!
  
• Frits komt regelmatig bij ons met een oude laptop, om het na het linuficeren aan minima te weg te geven. Deze keer met een ThinkPad die hij voor €50 overgenomen had. Nu mocht hij zelf #UbuntuMate installeren, hij deed dat met aparte partities voor efi, root, swap, home. Met een klein beetje hulp kreeg hij het helemaal voor elkaar. Deze laptop houdt hij zelf!

With Windows 10 coming to end of life, I thought I'd give Linux a re-try (tried it about 20 years ago).

I know these are all based on Debian:

1st I tried Linux Mint, touch pad and WiFi didn't work.

2nd I tried Ubuntu Mate, WiFi didn't work.

3rd Ubuntu, all seemed to work fine in live, so I installed it.
Then I got 'No Bootable Device', so went through the install again, and still 'No Bootable Device'. Then went through different settings in the Bias, with no luck.

4th Debian 13, everything apart from the camera works, and I'm pleased the camera doesn't work.

I don't understand why the others wouldn't work, might give them another go. But at least I can keep using my laptop, and get updates.

Does anyone know if you can launch an application on one workspace in #kde, and switch to another workspace while it is opening, with the application then still appearing in the original workspace? Or for that matter does anyone know of a desktop environment (linux, windows, mac, bsd anything!) that will do this? It doesn't here on #ubuntumate

@PepVerbsNouns This may be no better than Anaconda, now that I look at it -- but it seemed useful to have a visual reference, regardless.
