#FractionalScaling

Fractional Scaling, y'all!

KDE Plasma (X11) 5.27 on Debian 12 with 150% fractional scaling.
The window with the teensy mouse is Nheko, a Matrix client.

P.S.: Apparently, flatpak is the cultprit.

Has anyone tried the Cinnamon Wayland session with fractional scaling enabled? I know it’s experimental, but it interestingly spawns a bunch of artifacts and visual bugs when in use. I wonder if at least a couple of these bugs could potentially be squashed before the release of #linuxmint22
?

I plan to report these bugs tomorrow. Hopefully I actually report them in the right place, lol.

You use fractional scaling and XWayland apps are looking blurry for you?

XWayland 24.1 has been released addressing that issue!

Happy to have discovered #fractionalscaling for my multi-monitor setup in #GNOME (using 125% on one device)!
I'm aware of the potential downsides of oversampling + down-scaling, but eager to see how it performs for me.

@GTK Is the fractional scaling described here [1] for GTK4.14 already the actual true fractional scaling that was described here [2]? This would be amazing. I was afraid that the have to wait until

It appears that, after years of painful blurry #fractionalScaling of #xwayland apps, #GNOME finally seems to be working on a solution to allow them apps to scale themselves.

It also seems that the work is mostly done, and that the author of the merge request is aiming to have it included in #gnome46 . It will be available as an experimental setting, like fractional scaling in general.

As a #FrameworkLaptop owner who needs fractional scaling, I'm happy to see this.

I know it is an ongoing effort to make the Linux desktop more friendly to high-DPI screens, and variable DPI multi-monitor setups... I just want to say that terminal apps don't have this issue if you can easily switch font size in your terminal emulator 😆

I wish there was a way of using fractional scaling (on Linux) without making all monochrome images in the web browser look like crap because they're getting subtly scaled, even when you try to match the scale factor precisely.

(and I'm doing 125% fractional scaling, so it's not like it's a really *weird* number)

It's kind of sad when you're walking down memory lane on infinitemac.org, and it looks like blurry trash. :'(

Took a couple #Linux distros out for a spin today on my Lenovo x1 Carbon laptop. #EndeavourOS #SolusOS #MXLinux #NixOS to drop names.

It’s been a loooooong time since I looked at desktop environments as well. #FractionalScaling seems to be an issue still for most DEs. #HIDPI is life, get with it #LXQT & #XFCE. Also not impressed with the direction of #KDEplasma or #Gnome to be honest. #Budgie is great, and I enjoy seeing it get a chance in other distributions too.

#Fedora has been a favorite of mine for a long time, but seeing what #IBM has done with limiting #RedHat after they gutted #CentOS removes my ability to support them anymore.

Anyone have any suggestions?

@Alex_D Installed KDE Plasma and trying that now in place of Cinnamon and I think it does seem to handle fractional scaling much better!

How to Fix Blurry Firefox under Wayland on Ubuntu

The 2K screen on my “main” Ubuntu laptop is pin sharp but, alas, Mozilla Firefox is not! Now, I’m not saying the browser looks awful. It’s perfectly usable, and I reckon a fair number of people would struggle to see any issue at all. But I do. Fonts within the UI and within the web content are slightly blurry, and window controls, buttons, and other icons rendered don’t appear as crisp or pixel-perfect as the rest of the GNOME desktop I’ve no idea how “widespread” this issue is as, honestly, blurry fonts in a browser on Linux could be caused :sys_more_orange:

The default resolution is too dense on the Pinebook Pro, so I had to:

gsettings set org.gnome.mutter experimental-features "['scale-monitor-framebuffer']"

And then set it to 150% in the display settings.

If you do that and use Firefox, it will appear blurry so edit the firefox.desktop file (/usr/share/applications/org.mozilla.firefox.desktop) and change the exec line to:

Exec=env MOZ_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 firefox %u

You:

- have a laptop with a 13" screen and 1920x1080 resolution and a 4K external monitor

- run the laptop at 1x scale

- run the 4K screen at 2x scale (pixel doubled)

- are on elementary OS 5.x (Hera) or elementary OS 6 (Odin)

- want to be able to read what’s on every screen whether the external screen is plugged in or not

You need this script:

:ubuntu: Ubuntu 19.04
