#Mixbus

So, when I play back a music in #Audacity via the #ALSA interface of #Pipewire, it is roughly 3dB* more quiet than when I play back the same piece from my #DAW / #Ardour via the #Jack interface. When I play back the file in good old Clementine player via Jack, it's also as it should be.

Things like this make me nervous. Okay I exported my music from Ardour or #Mixbus in the current case, just wanna check the file again, so Audacity… and then it all of sudden sounds differently.

*: I have a digital audio console with peak-hold meters at the other end, so it's not just by ear.

#BandcampFriday again and I'd like to recommend this piano solo live album by my wife: annaohlmann.bandcamp.com/album

Please retoot if you like it.

(I did the technical part of the recording in the church St. Maria als… in Stuttgart. For the nerds: This was recorded using 4× Neumann TLM102 into a RME #Fireface 400 + #RME QuadMic + MacBook Pro 2017 running #Ardour. Mixed in #Mixbus on #Linux. No editing except for cutting away pauses between pieces including the applause.)

So, after a three hour fight with the #Lightworks #NLE on #UbuntuStudio 24.04 #Linux, mainly working around bugs and doing around 50 restarts, installing the latets proprietary #AMDgpu drivers…

… I can finally edit that 20 minutes of footage I recorded in the morning, of which 6m30s are to become a video.

Except I can't, because things like this make my brain go from creative mode to berserk mode.

Is #Linux to blame? No, not at all. It's the folks creating Lightworks. They did not fix bugs I have been repeatedly reporting since over a year over the course of 4 or 5 betas. And now, this is not some open source dude doing this in this spare time, I pay for their licensing product.

Reliable software in the creative context can be produced for Linux – #Harrison demonstrate it with their #Mixbus #DAW.

So, my client wants the mix a little "fresher". Sounds like #mastering voodoo #EQ to me!

Several routes to go… play with the simple EQs on the master bus with of #Mixbus (10 Pro). Use #Fabfilter, the go-to tool for all kinds of natural-sounding EQing. Or try something else?

So I went to #Linuxdaw.org to check what's out there. Found #Korneff #SitralKlangfilter

It's really something to be quite uncertain about, doing A/B tests with +2dB somethings…

One thing is certain though, Korneff is a hungry beef on the CPU.

Here's another tip for you, @BrodieOnLinux .

In the world of instrument and effect plugins, there are #AudioPlugins modelled after analogue counterparts.

I've always found it fascinating, how you simulate a faulty capacitor, a crack in a tube or dirt on a lead, to recreate classic & vintage sound.

If you want that on #Linux - and want that vintage sound, with warm compressors and EQs, I suggest you check out #Mixbus. It's a #DAW with built in SSL grade modelled sound.

There's a part of me that wants to sell my #Ableton license and move over to Bitwig. The chief reason being I want to move from Windows and refuse to move to MacOS.

I'd like an operating system where I have control instead of some American Silicon Valley vendor.

#Bitwig, #Reaper, #Mixbus, even #PreSonus StudioOne has a beta in Linux.

#AbletonLive costing as much as it does gives me pause upgrading from 11 to 12, because for the same price, I can get a cross platform DAW.

So, Today I plugged my Alesis e-drum total kit USB out into my laptop running Ubuntu Studio, I loaded up the red zepplin drum kit lv2 plugin in Mixbus for the first time. I was really happy to find out that It just worked ootb and now I'm tracking my own drums with a decent sounding sample kit! Love it!

Creating all new music for an upcoming Halloween performance. Here's my stab at a Carpenter-ish vibe with room for live additions...

Every day I find time to create or record *something* in the studio. No matter what.

I call it the Daily Catch. 🎣

This is the catch from 29/07/24, a live performance on the 3rd Wave and Moog Matriarch + Deckard's Voice, recorded in Mixbus 10.

New recording is in post-production, to be released by the end of the week.

I've been using new & pedals and as the only daw (I was using prior to that). I always appreciate its light footprint.

I still have to learn about mastering and gain staging but everything went so well.

Impatience!

Harrison did it again:

Should look familiar to many users.

I installed Harrison Mixbus and was completely disappointed.

Mixbus is Ardour, with additional functionality from proprietary DSP, replicating the workflow, signal path, and sound of a Harrison console.

I think I'm done recording the guitar parts.

Recording in Harrison #mixbus went pretty smoothly. I record guitars DI and use #amplitube ITB. I monitor the unprocessed guitar from my interface during recording. I've tried lowering the number of samples in ASIO4ALL, but then I get hitching; so I gave up on that.

Comping in Mixbus works. I recorded to layers, chose the overall best, and then cut-&-pasted to fix errors. It's not as good as #studioone 's comping, though.

I don't usually use the more advanced audio editing features that Mixbus doesn't have - audio bending, for example - so I didn't miss them. I have tracks with the DI guitar input, which I then bounce through Amplitube to "actual" tracks for mixing; and that works fine.

And it's definitely more convenient to record, comp, and mix in the same DAW.

Next up: vocals.

I got Harrison #mixbus to recognize my audio interface, so I'm going to try recording and comping in Mixbus directly.

Previously I used Studio One for recording and programming and exported stems to Mixbus for mixing (because I'm a masochist? I need more complexity in my life? I dunno). But recording directly into Mixbus seems like it should save some time and effort. We'll see.

I'm hoping somebody can advise me, or point me in the direction of advice. Apologies in advance that this post is a bit long, all-over-the-place, and hashtag-heavy. I really don't know what I'm doing. 😂

What I'm trying to do is make MIDI renditions of music that sound pretty good. For myself as a composer, and for stimuli in music cognition research.

My first problem: I need to commit to a DAW and learn how to use it well. I used Logic in my undergrad, but I do not have a Mac and no longer have access to it. I have Mixbus from a music recording class, but it doesn't seem ideal for MIDI-based projects. I have MuseScore 4, but I haven't learned what it can (and can't) do yet.

My second problem: I want to use high-quality sample libraries, but I do not know how to get started.

I like open source, but I am not at all opposed to paying for software and sample libraries. Or buying new hardware. I just don't want to pay for things that aren't going to be useful for me (I also prefer one-time fees to ongoing subscriptions). Windows or Linux.

Just discovered the excellent distortion plugin called Deckwrecka, designed for beats/bass/low-end of the audio spectrum. It was just sitting there, inside Audacity, waiting to be found.

Gonna check Ardour + Mixbus, hoping it shows in the plugin list there too 😉

Been using Harrison Mixbus 32c for some audio mixing projects. It doesn't work well for my method of composition (Reaper is much better for audio, virtual instruments, midi, etc), but it's quite nice if you have a stack of audio files to mix, having good quality compression and eq on each channel. It's pretty quick to get a good mix.
