Tested the ability to record and play back Midi data from/to my Keyboard using the arecordmidi and aplaymidi commands. These work! The Keyboard is connected to the computer via a USB cable (+ 8ft USB extender cable). Next, I need to integrate Midi recording and playback into my script, along with the existing ADC/DAC and sound card LineIn/LineOut options.

The disk formats of yesteryear. Which ones did you use? Can you name them all?

Hurray! New Mac mini as my media hub (just music for now) is all set up. Had do dig through old cables and such to find a keyboard and mouse to use. Keyboard was from my Mac Cube! Also had to make a quick run out for an HDMI cable. Just goes to show that sometimes it IS a good idea to hang on to old equipment, and have decent adapters. I also realized I really need to go through those boxes of stuff and re-organize them. #Macintosh #OldComputers #MacCube

Hardware liberators and other #oldcomputers folks, can you give me some advice here?

I received a cheap Chinese-made laptop whose owner said is "not fast enough anymore." And there's another problem: the keyboard developed a problem where random keys on the built-in keyboard get "pressed" all the time, leading to an unusable system. If you open a terminal on it from a live Linux distro, soon it's littered with "^J^J^J^J^J^J^J^J^J^J^J^J^J^J^J^J^J" sequences and you can't run any commands on it. Or use GUI apps, since other keys like F-keys, Control, Alt and even arrow keys are pressed as well. If you've bound anything to Ctrl+Alt and a letter, guess what's going to be activated en-masse?

Still, to its credit, the machine has 6GB RAM, a fully working screen, WiFi NIC, hard drive and basically everything else *other* than the keyboard that can still be used well with Linux, so it's not quite yet a basket case. So what I'm planning to do? Nuke that keyboard - in a software way. I'm thinking that there's got to be a kernel module that does the talking to the built-in keyboard and touchpad. If I remove it without removing USB support, then listo - the whole thing might just become usable again.

Now the question: what is the (Linux) kernel module that is responsible for this communication? Am I right to assume that if I un'modprobe it, it will stop receiving built-in keyboard input completely?

Thanks, and boosts appreciated!

Man, #NetBSD continues to be super smooth!

Today I picked up my old Dell D620 and remembered that I had it installed from a few weeks before I tried seriously the Old Computer Challenge. And to no surprise from me, NetBSD continues to be amazing - even in this almost 20-year-old hardware.

And it wasn't even me who bought this computer. My parents bought it for me to finish my High School studies with Windows XP, and when I went to college, it was the computer that brought me to Linux. And I thought a Linux-based OS would be the last one that this computer would support until it finally gave out - until this year. And now I see that in a world slowly giving x86 the boot, NetBSD might as well be the only reasonable alternative in the future (well, until 2038, at least).

I was having problems with rxvt-unicode in #NetBSD (I think they don't have its terminfo definitions by default) and xterm was pretty ugly to work with.

So I instead went with another old terminal I haven't used in quite literally a decade: Sakura. It's the terminal emulator used by the #SliTaz project, another ultra-minimalist lightweight Linux distro project. To my surprise: everything works very well, it's still pretty lightweight and also very modern!

I guess some bad things come for good reasons!

Since I have found that installing #linux has become easier and easier the last few years, I decided to conduct an experiment. I gave my 10 year old daughter a usb stick and had her install it on a Dell laptop from 2011.
I recorded the whole thing (recorded her on my phone while a capture card recorded her screen). And for the most part, it went well. There was an issue about the correct time zone - which I believe is either due to the collapse of the US educational system or even more likely her mother's fault. 😃 Unfortunately, after installing Linux Mint all the way. She wasn't able to get the wireless card working. In her defense, I couldn't either until I connected a cat5 cable and downloaded the drivers.
The thing is: I was able to connect to the wireless router when I booted to the live distro. The drivers had to have been on the stick! Why didn't they install?

Windows XP in 2025? Some people are still using seriously old computers! This article explores the reasons why and the risks involved.

Ok,

Now running Debian 12 on the 22+yr old desktop - whatever updates MXlinux has made to 23.6 Libretto in recent months, it frustratingly won't run properly on this old machine, and because I need to be working not noodling all day trying to get it working, this is the road I have had to go down.

So my old desktop did not like the last full update from MXlinux, literally fucked it!
There were no problems at all for my super wizzy octa-core laptop, so I think the old girl is now just to old.

Anyway, I ended up recovering her, she is shaky but working (for now at least), but all is not lost, there are plenty of other distros of Linux I can use to keep her going.

So, playtime 😁
