@blog As an old IT geek that started in this game long before the modern internet (I had an email address in the 1980s when all it could do was talk to UK or US universities or the military via JANET or DARPANET etc.over UUCP) I have been increasingly depressed at how big US tech has worked so hard at killing off the original,, open, standardised, federrated design principles of the web and sucking everyone into their closed silos.

Email is one of the original protocols in use and is still federated in theory but nearly everyone iis forced onto Google or Microsoft as there are few good alternatives.

I have hosted own email (plus calendar and contacts) for 25 years now. Not too tricky if you are IT savvy... but...

My stack (all open source):

Opensuse Linux
Postfix email server
MariaDB database
Dovecot IMAP server
Apache web server
Amavis anti-spam/anti-virus
Spamassasin spam filters
SOGo groupware

Plus good secure DNS with SPF, DKIM and DMARC records and reverse-ip for the server.

@spitzohr @SunDancer Als Anbieter werden oft mailbox.org und posteo.de empfohlen. Die setzen technisch auf das zwar quelloffene, aber ziemlich teure #openxchange .

Andere Anbieter setzen daher auf das kostenfreie #SOGo, zB bei der Mailcow/Servercow.

The H and K project is a project to build a server that can be easily hosted in the basement or in another place in the house. For the basic services set up so far, #yunohost is used with #zola, #sogo and #gotosocial. Next, a #matrix server will be installed. It is currently still unclear whether it will be a full Synapse server, or one of the smaller alternatives. It is important that all data are stored in your own house without using servers of strangers on the Internet (AKA Cloud).

Based on this judgment https://www.datenschutzticker.de/2024/03/edsb-eu-kommission-därcht-datenschutz-microsoft-365/ there will probably be some need for such solutions in the foreseeable future. Smart users have already left the "cloud" or even better never used it.

Für die bis jetzt eingerichteten Basisdienste wird #Yunohost mit #Zola, #Sogo und #GotoSocial verwendet. Als nächstes wird ein #Matrix Server installiert. Aktuell noch unklar ist, ob es ein voller Synapse Server , oder eine der kleineren Alternativen wird. Wichtig ist, dass alle Daten im eigenen Haus ohne Daten auf Server von Fremden im Internet (aka Cloud) zu speichern.

Basierend auf diesem Urteil https://www.datenschutzticker.de/2024/03/edsb-eu-kommission-verletzt-datenschutz-mit-microsoft-365/ wird es in absehbarer Zeit vermutlich einigen Bedarf an solchen Lösungen geben. Smarte User haben die "Cloud" bereits verlassen, oder noch besser, nie verwendet.
