Open Document Format turns 20, but Microsoft Office still reigns supreme

“It’s been 20 years since the Open Document Format (ODF) became a standard, marking a milestone in the push for open, vendor-neutral file formats — and the beginning of a long but largely unsuccessful attempt to loosen Microsoft Office’s grip on the ...continues

Surprised to see my local library uses so I can just subscribe with using my instance for when they get new books by authors I like! You can also use the app and email alerts but there is something nice about this because you don't even need an account... I think google killed their RSS reader back in the day because it was too good.

🚀 Exciting news!
Our Matrix Space is now available: matrix.to/#/#ovr-foundation:no
Everyone is welcome to join — we aim to build a decentralized, community-driven standard for vulnerability coordination. 🌐

The first PoC draft of the OVR standard will be released in the coming days. Stay tuned and help shape the future with us!

@sergedroz @gcve Hello, thank you for your question.

Both OVR and GCVE share the same goal: strengthening global vulnerability coordination.

However, from what I understand, GCVE is still based on individual instances that could fail without true redundancy.
Additionally, GCVE is maybe not really neutral due to its structure and affiliations.

OVR is developing a fully decentralized and resilient concept — not just for vulnerabilities, but also preparing for SBOM integration and considering upcoming legal requirements (e.g., cybersecurity regulations).

Our vision is an open, neutral, and community-based ecosystem that can survive political risks, technical outages, and grow sustainably with the global community.

Further information will follow in the next few days.

@ezra personally I think #Apple should be forced.to implement #AV1 & #WebM and that @EUCommission could mandate #OpenStandards.

  • As for quality, were it not for #patents and espechally #SoftwarePantents, we'd have way better #Codecs, but this way people engineering a #FLOSS #Codec are constantly required to specifically avoid infringement of Patents and other IP by not using anything remotely related to it...

Also if #H265 wasn't #patented and facing #PatentTrolls and #rentseekers we'd see way better quality there as well.

  • Cuz #CCSS & #FLOSS can't share code nor expertise at all.

And yes, Apple (#MPEGLA-Member) is at the root of the problem!

@drew_belloc @noodlejetski I don't have a dock either. I do have a favourites row though, and currently these are the pinned apps (arranged in no particular order):

1. Calls by #GNOME & #Purism

2. Chats (#Chatty) by Purism & GNOME - supports #SMS, #Matrix, #XMPP

3. Contacts by GNOME

4. #Firefox web browser by #Mozilla

5. #SignalMessenger

6. GNOME Settings

7. #Phosh Mobile Settings

8. Tweaks by #postmarketOS

9. #Tuba (client for #Mastodon / #Fediverse)

10. #Kasts by #KDE

11. #DeltaChat ( #openstandards-based, #securityaudited, fast #e2ee chats over bloody #email!)

12. Files / #Nautilus by GNOME

All #FreeSoftware /Libre, #OpenSource #FOSS / #FLOSS : )

Note: The home screen and the app drawer / search / overview is all one and the same.

The image shows a Librem 5 Linux smartphone home screen with a dark background featuring a starry space theme. At the top, there is a status bar displaying the time as 2:39 PM, 4G connectivity, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth turned off, and a battery level of 84%. Below the status bar, there is a search bar with the text "Search apps..." in gray.

The home screen is organised into a grid of app icons. The 1st row includes a green phone icon, a green messaging icon, a blue book icon with "@" symbol, and a Firefox browser icon.

The 2nd row features a blue Signal Messenger icon, a gear settings icon, a smartphone icon with toggle switches,

The 3rd row features a tuba musical instrument icon, a radio tower broadcast icon, a chat bubble icon with a "d" which looks like and upside down and inverted "g" (opposite of #Google?), and a blue file drawer icon.

The 4th row includes an audio player icon, a timing lock icon, a lion face Brave browser icon, and a calculator icon.

The 5th row shows a calendar icon, a camera icon, a camera under construction icon, and a carburetor icon.

The 6th row includes a clocks icon, a terminal icon, a headphones over book (audiobook) icon, and a dinosaur icon.

The 7th row features a pie chart icon, a wrench over hard disk icon, a document with eyeglasses icon, and a green circular icon with a white swirl.

🛡️ Coming soon: ovr-foundation.org

The CVE system nearly collapsed in April. We’re building something stronger.
A decentralized standard for vulnerability disclosure is on the way.

Don't miss the launch.

🛡️ Something special is coming soon.

The OVR Foundation is launching its website shortly.

We’re building an open, decentralized standard for vulnerability reporting — because global security should never rely on one country or institution.

Stay tuned and follow. A more resilient future starts here.

@cwicseolfor @hakfoo @futurebird @lnlyisol There was also the politics of it.

For a long time, Silicon Valley positioned itself as being the enlightened, socially-conscious, pro-freedom, pro-consumer alternative disrupting established cartels and vested interests.

Instead of believing what the old media barons tell you about the War in Iraq and Saddam's WMDs, our platforms let anyone be a publisher!

Instead of the RIAA's boy bands and lip syncing pop idols, we allow talented independent artists to be heard!

Instead of IBM, and later Microsoft, having a monopoly, buy our products instead! Think different! Don't be evil! It just works!

And then once everyone was locked into the walled gardens, the enshittification began.

Now.

What we really should have collectively been insisting on was a genuinely enlightened, socially-conscious, pro-freedom, pro-consumer alternative.

Member-owned, community-run non-profits. Creating open source software, based on open standards and protocols.

Where you own, and are free to repair, and are free to tweak or upgrade, your hardware. Which comes pre-installed with open source software from member-owned non-profits.

The Wikipedia/Wikimedia Foundation model works for encyclopaedias. So let's do that for search too.

And let's not leave the design of tech to just the computer science majors and MBAs. Let's get some social science and humanities folks in that design process too.

We can still do it.

But we need to start by recognising that tech, and who owns it, and who designs it, and who makes decisions about it, is a political issue.

We, the people, need to make those decisions. Not just the billionaire VCs and CEOs.
