Upcoming #permacomputing meeting (edition 3) in #vienna!

- Tuesday, July 15th 19:00
- This time we'll meet outside at Auer-Welsbach-Park (close by Schönbrunn)
- "Batteries included!" (scnr) because ... our topic will be batteries: Building open source batteries, batteries and the energy transition, lithium mining, ethical ramifications, and so on.

Anyone interested in the topic of permacomputing.net/ is very welcome, whether you're just curious or already a seasoned permacomputer, we're glad to have you! :)

Exact meeting spot in the park is still tbd, but our batterista of the evening @Ansimorph will be able to supply it at some point between now and the meeting itself, so keep an eye out for that (I'll relay it too then).

Just checked the specs of my wife's old desktop (circa 2012) Intel Core i7, 6GB RAM.

I think it should run whatever distro I throw at it and make a better torrent box than my old Chromebook running Pop!OS . Might become my daily desk driver too.

If you're not on Wayland make sure to install plasma-x11-session to avoid hiccups when upgrading to Plasma 6.4. One of my machines is a very old i7 from around 2012 running 4xx driver that can't run .

🎇 Help save Philly's local solarpunk bookstore! Iffy Books, which has offered everything from books on permaculture to first aid workshops to open hours for soldering assistance, needs your help. Please share this letter widely!

I've been grateful for the opportunity this space offered me to rekindle my relationship with digital art for merch and run solar art and queer zine workshops. Iffy Books is irreplaceable in our community. To keep offering programs and resources that foster climate activism, right to repair, and skill sharing in Philly, we need to take action now.

@msavoritias Thanks for sharing this. I hadn't seen the Cooperative Software Development Guidelines before. Also, I really like how it composes the #Permacomputing Principles.

Oddly... having second thoughts about going to #VCFSW.

I don't know if it's a #2025Anxiety thing or just general ennui, but all I can muster is a half-hearted, "maybe?"

You know what would be even better than a retro tech convention? A FOSS / #PermaCulture tech convention. THAT would be trippy.

Like, I love retro tech. I lived through that era. Sitting in front of the machines that meant so much to me growing up is a wonderful feeling.

But I guess nostalgia alone doesn't really soothe the dystopia-anguished heart. Not for long.

I miss going to #LinuxUserGroups. There was one in OKC in the 2000s, and it was always a lot of fun.

Instead of looking backwards at retro tech (which will always be awesome, just to be clear), just imagine a #FOSS/#PermaComputing symposium/convention of awesome nerds like @jacqueline, @neauoire, @mntmn, #BunnieHuang, and maybe some folks from @frameworkcomputer

That would be AWESOME!

I was just interviewed by Mandy Henk for her course on Decomputing: A Community Exploration darktimesacademy.co.nz/decompu

I enjoyed the format! I was happy to talk about and provide my perspective about @compudanzas, #permacomputing, the value of (de)computing, and so on. :jarotsim:

I've done a top to bottom revision of the Friendly eZ80 CP/M computer page, and software releases. I've got 10 of the new boards running, a couple of the previous version are out there, languishing in Customs (US side of course).

I'll take a couple to Tear Down in Portland this week.

What if architecture prioritized repair, care, and maintenance; cut ties with fossil fuels; and did the necessary work to truly decarbonize, and decolonize the building industry? What would that look like?
For some architects, degrowth has meant calling for a “global moratorium” on new construction, an idea that the most ethical thing an architect can do in 2025 is simply to stop building new buildings, instead thinking more strategically about how to make best use of the stock we have around us. In other circles, it’s meant cutting ties with the fossil fuel industry; building buildings with timber instead of concrete; and sourcing construction materials from local or regional manufacturers rather than global supply chains.
engineers of computer infrastructure should really take note of the climate discourse happening in architecture.

Last week I learned about #Permacomputing. Pretty cool concept and really looking forward to learning more about it.

Saying "No" to annoying Apps (that I still have to use) when they ask for more permissions is the one thing that makes me feel like I'm sticking it to the man.

For a different way to think about computing as part of a more equitable future, I feel inspired by browsing the Permacomputing Wiki:

permacomputing.net/permacomput

Permacomputing is not retrocomputing (though it can be a source of ideas) nor is it post-apocalyptic (though contemplating collapse can teach us about constraints). It encourages a new way of thinking about computing.

I think anyone running a free/libre OS on recycled hardware is off to a good start!

This explains why an Android device from 2015 can't connect to modern sites secured by a Let's Encrypt cert.

But a much older 2010 MacBook or 2013 iPad, still can.

And that's with default built-ins, before we get to strategies like replacing IE/Safari with Firefox ESR (which can even enable Windows XP to browse the modern web), or replacing Google Android with PostmarketOS.

Compare this to Apple, e.g. an iPad from 2013:
* ships iOS 7,
* runs new major iOS 12 from 2018,
* support updates to 2023.

a MacBook or iMac from 2010:
* runs new major macOS release from 2016,
* with support updates to 2019.

That's 5 new major releases you'll see, and 10 years of long-term support, e.g. a new TLS root cert for Let's Encrypt.

youtu.be/EYzN_tgut88?t=3966 ← The CHM's oral history of #LynnConway was just put up on YouTube. I've linked to a timecode well into the video, where she sums up exactly the sort of "communities over products" thinking that inspires me to find technology satisfying. #PermaComputing
