Huh, looks like my today's presentation about X server setup for minimalists (based on my eugene-andrienko.com/it/2025/0 blogpost) will be kinda … controversial, lol :drgn_blush_giggle:

Usually, announcments in this #hackspace channel have only positive emojis :drgn_cup_mlem:

Post has a lot of positive emojis and some negative emojis.

The Input Stack on Linux – An End-To-End Architecture Overview

venam.net/blog/unix/2025/11/27

Patrick Louis writes: ""Let’s explore and deobfuscate the input stack on #Linux. Our aim is to understand its components and what each does. Input handling can be divided into two parts, separated by a common layer:

#Kernel-level handling: It deals with what happens in the kernel and how events are exposed to user-space
[…]
Exposed layer (middle)
[…]
User-space handling:
[…]
The Widgets, #XServer, #X11 window managers, and #Wayland compositors, which rely on everything else

We’ll try to make sense of all this, one thing at a time, with a logical and coherent approach.""

💡 X.Org Developer Conference | XDC 2025

I just spent some time watching a few of the videos recently uploaded from XDC 2025. There are some interesting presentations with regards to providing X11 / XServer functionality and compatibility in Wayland, e.g., XWayland, Wayback, etc., including requests for working groups to come together to implement some of the proposals under consideration.

🚨 Oh no! The X.Org X server has more holes than a Swiss cheese! 🧀 For the six people who still use it, the suspense of those 'multiple issues' is killing us. Who knew X could stand for 'xtra' vulnerabilities? 🤦‍♂️

Updated my blogpost about simple [*] X11 configuration — add a section for Qt 6 configuration — how to make Qt 6 applications looks like the other GTK2/GTK3/Qt5 programs.

[*] "Simple" — by using console and editing the text files. Without DEs and heavy programs.

@raven @RecurringBloatware @probono Same story, I used different monitors (CRT 17" iiyama, some Samsung 17", Benq XI2420z 24", 2k panel from some HP EliteBook in my laptop and tons of secondary displays and projectors), various OSes and distros (Slackware, Debian, Linux Mint, Oracle Linux, Devuan, Gentoo, FreeBSD, etc) and various video cards (old Palit with AGP bus😃, GTX 760 Ti and Intel GMA X950/X3100).

Also I've installed a lot of Linuxes on my previous work and for some friends too :drgn_happy:

And I never saw something like that people posting when speaking about "screen tearing". Tend to think that despite the problem exists — it isn't so widespread as people like to claim :drgn_sigh:

Participated in the Undefined hacker's festival and have a speech about my modded #Thinkpad X220.

Looks like I'm not only like to write enormously big blogposts. But also I'm able to make an enormously big presentations :drgn_blush_giggle: — my limit was 30 minutes and (looks like) my presentation was made for 1.5 hours, so @nikhotmsk stopped my endless speech :drgn_blush_giggle:

It was a lot of fun. First, I fixed the lamp, when came to the place. Then, I perform the presentation in the #Emacs through the VGA cable. Looks like it was unshielded, so a lot of cool video-noise from a DJ's devices were visible on the projector's screen during the presentation.

At least, I spoke something about WiFi drivers in #FreeBSD and about #Xserver before my time was out :drgn_happy:

Also, I met one of the fedifriends IRL. Sadly, I forgot to ask about his username, so if you are reading this — please mention me in the replies :drgn_lurk_cute:

Screenshot of my presentation in the Emacs. It is visible that it was made in the LaTeX. There are name of the presentation (Thinkpad X220 modification), my credentials, date and logo of Thinkpad.

Is there a "#wayland" app for android or ios like there are #xserver ones?

Wrote a blogpost about simple (I mean with a shell and a text editor) #X11 configuration.

Covered topics:
1) #Trackball configuration for left hand. Also remapping of some buttons to have scrolling and middle button (not exists out of the box).
2) Theming: #GTK2 #GTK3 #QT , installing cursor(s), fonts and icons.
3) #Xrandr for multimonitor configuration
4) #Xserver settings for #HighDPI
5) #XDG utils and #Emacs as a system file manager
6) #XDM login window

Oh boi! Looks like on the August my schedule is big :dragnaww:

1) Speech about #Emacs in SaintP #hackspace (0x08.in/)

2) Speech about #Xserver (configurarion and hidden gems) in the same hackspace

3) Speech about my heavily modified #Thinkpad X220 in SaintP area (Roschino town) in #Undefined #hacker festival (undefined.chaosconstructions.r). It will be streamed in the Internet and if I'll be able to obtain a resulting video — I'll upload it to my PeerTube.

@lfa Hell yeah! :1000:

The more I read about #Xserver configuration and corresponding programs (like xrandr) then more I have QUESTIONS about common rumors: "X can't do this", "X can't do that", "X is obsolete", etc, etc…

Damn, #TIL that configure my GUI to work with 2K display is very simple [1] — just specify the dimensions of display's active area in the X server configuration and restart X server!

That all, the letters on the screen become visible without tricky GTK/Qt specific environment variables :dragnhappy:

[1] Not applied to the Firefox / Librewolf — it is completely ignores X settings :dragnsad:

#XServer #Xorg #HighDPI #FreeBSD

And specified these dimensions in the proper section (file
/usr/local/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-intel.conf):

Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "MainMonitor"
    Option "Primary" "true"
    DisplaySize 276.48 155.52
EndSection

The MainMonitor is specified in the Device section as monitor
connected to the DP-3 bus:

Section "Device"
    Identifier "intel"
    ...
    Option "Monitor-DP-3" "MainMonitor"
    Option "Monitor-LVDS-1" "PhantomMonitor"
EndSection

And both sections are connected in the Screen section:

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "MainScreen"
    Device "intel"
    Monitor "MainMonitor"
EndSectionSharp LQ125T1JW02 display specifications. The dimensions of active area: 276.48x155.52 mm.

@BrodieOnLinux UPD Despite my prev toot, I still don't see any pros on switch to Wayland:

- Screen tearing? I've used different videocards since 2005 — ATI, NVidia, Intel — and never met this problem

- 4K displays and DPI? Lol, I'm living in Russia! 4K gaming monitors is for rich. BTW, when I connect my laptop to various displsys and projectors, xrandr --dpi and --scale always rescue

- Gaming? I use Windows to play Deep Rock Galactic for few years. Dunno play any other games🤷‍♂️
