Found this bad boy last week while roaming around a flea market. It seems to be a generic Wondermedia/VIA netbook with really old android.
My enthusiasm quickly deflated though as I realized I have no clue how to get it to boot anything but the stock android. Tried an SD card with u-boot, found unconnected USB (no UART in sight) but nothing seemed to work. Can it be this is hardwired to be booting whatever is currently in NAND only?
Tried running BashCore live USB on an old Acer Aspire One D160 (2009) as a minimal home server (VPS-style).
Everything worked… until the Atheros Wi-Fi chip (ath9k) crashed the system in a loop.
Not BashCore’s fault — just unreliable legacy hardware.
Blacklisting the driver solved it. 👊

Throwback : When "suspend" didn't always work out of the box in #Linux, it was cool to make a video of it just working. #Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) on a #Samsung N120 #netbook (2009). I believe I worked at #Canonical at the time, this was a birthday present to my wife.

Fun Fact: At the end of 2008 / beginning of 2009, I bought a mini laptop — an Acer Aspire One, on sale because no one wanted them. Windows didn’t run on it for even a minute, but every other OS did. Including a version of "Hackintosh", which actually led me to get a MacBook Pro a few months later (which my parents are still using). It ran quite well.
But the OS that worked best and longest on that little guy was PC-BSD. I truly did everything with it. When I was flying around Europe during the most hectic years of my life, it was my trusty companion - always ready, always in my backpack. I have a special memory tied to it that will always make it dear to me, but it’s a private one 😃
Oh, I almost forgot the Fun Fact: its hostname was always "acerone" - from Acer (Aspire) One, of course. But in Italian, "acerone" sounds like "big Acer", and considering its micro size (9 inches), it was truly ironic.
I mean, I'd not have any issues with a "shitty" #Netbook if it's prized acceptable.
Cuz then I might be better off buying a used #ThinkPad with #USBc, remove the dead battery and stap a Powerbank to it.
Tho I'd rather start the #NUCbook project instead or buy a @frameworkcomputer / #Framework12 instead...

Also I'm probably going to regret buying a netbook again, my hands are really not built for something this small.
Looks like Xandros is still installed, which is neat but pretty much useless at this point. I may snag a disk image just so I have a backup though.
Was excited about the new Framework 12", but I'm going to first try maxing the RAM in my Gateway LT2030u netbook.
Its goals are:
- Type stuff (LaTeX/nano)
- Mild web browsing
- SSHing into more powerful machines
- Nethack
It should be able to do that with 2GB.

I was impressed with how quick and easy the installation was, thanks in no small part to very concise docs. I confirmed everything works. Look forward to an exciting article about Tinker WriterDeck OS drafted on my newly configured netbook.
I checked my emails and I apparently picked this machine up in 2010 from Woot.com. It's a cherry red Gateway LT2030U.
I think I'm sticking with Bodhi Linux--it's speedy so far and I'm sure it'll be able to handle nano, nethack, and LaTeX.
