There's a patch of Access Land to the south east of Rothbury. The path up to it used to have white birch railings, but these fell down a year ago. The path has now become quite overgrown to the point where an unofficial path about 100 metres further along the cutting is easier.

I love the gnarled, lichen-covered appearance of this twisted old crabapple tree.
Fallen crab apples litter the ground below its arching branches. Sorry, but it's not exactly a 'thick trunk'.
These trees almost always originate from a discarded apple core thrown aside decades ago by a passer-by. This is why you often find them at the side of long-establlished lanes, as here, but also near to railway lines, footpaths, and canal towpaths.

I don't suppose the golf club are too happy about this very old public right-of-way crossing their course. You can't see from the photo but it is actually cobbled along much of its length, a feature that dates from the path's former life as a track across the pleasure grounds of Beauchief Hall, Sheffield, UK. The footpaths near the Hall and the nearby ruined Abbey are well worth exploring. Don't miss the deer paddock with its herd of red deer.

One of the stiles that was difficult to climb over. IT wasn't wide enough, there was barbed wire and the standing plank was at the wrong angle meaning you had to be a gymnast to safely pass.
