How can I display back an entire desktop from a remote linux machine?

I have a box running Xfce on Arch. I have a box on the network running the new PopOS! with the COSMIC desktop.

I would like to start a second X server on the Arch machine, displaying a COSMIC desktop from the PopOS! machine.

Seems a shame to recycle these but I feel the chances of me ever doing low level #X11 GUI programming again is pretty much nonexistent ... #xwindows

Okay, I’ve tried half a dozen different searches, and can’t come close to what I’m looking for…

I want to build a virtual desktop environment in a Linux *server*, which is remote at a client site. (Not on a cloud server! Not in a VM!)

This server would connect to a cloud hosted VPN, then I’d connect to the same VPN from a tablet, and access a GUI desktop over VNC, so I can fire up a web browser / terminal and fix devices on their network…

The server’s screen should be a CLI login, so my work remains private.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The open source fork of Xorg is being used far beyond Linux.

@jameshowell Thank you! It was weird thinking back to that. Do you remember the XFree86 server that was built to run in low memory situations? Was it called Xtiny or something? #xwindows #xfree86

I think I have removed all the Wayland bits that I can from my Debian OS. I don't need stuff I do not use on my system. I tried Wayland the other day and some of my programs didn't even work. That was the last straw. #Debian #Wayland #X11 #XWindows

@movq That sans serif rendering in Firefox looks a lot like what I get when I use bitmap fonts under X11 (crisp, clear, quite readable), in this case specifically Adobe Helvetica (so I'm guessing it's Arial there?).

@RL_Dane

To everyone their liking of Gnome, for me this system started to become unusable when they started to **remove** configurable features which is more than a decade and a half ago

So I haven't seen for more than a decade and a half and I do not miss it at all

However their work is vital and crucial because the diversity is important for our desktop managers there obviously are a lot of people who still like the way it works

Came back to my office, my little Mint Laptop had secured the desktop after the screensaver fired off. So I’m looking at the login screen on and I see the clock there, and an album cover from . Hah! That's fucking slick AF. Spotify knows enough to hand Album Covers to loginwindow! These are the kinds of polish and refinement that impress. Bravo! It's little things, that you even tried…

I’m not a fan of , but it has served well for 40(!) years:
