Dude, IDrive e2 just did maintenance on the Singapore node without telling us! And their status page is behind a login. I wouldn't recommend them.
It's messing up our toots with images, so they're not posting or showing up.

With about 1.04TB of deleted data still in Wasabi (yeah, I'm still paying for data that's not there until about December), it's about twice as expensive as IDrive e2 at around 1.4TB of data.
And deletes are fucking deletes on IDrive e2.
I don't know the reliability of IDrive e2. I can't imagine it's bad or they wouldn't be hanging around. But I just need this to be an offsite copy. It's not a source of truth. That's here at home.
BMW rozpoczyna nową erę. W Monachium zadebiutowała NEUE KLASSE i elektryczne iX3
Światła zamiast chromu i panoramiczny wyświetlacz
W połączeniu z nowym, bezramkowym wyświetlaczem centralnym i nową kierownicą, tworzy on nową generację systemu iDrive.

I mentioned the other day that I could only start a new game of The Sims 4 & not load my existing one. Since then, I have found out my save folder was empty & I have no idea why. Today I found out that iDrive had a backup. It's an old save, going by the characters' ages, but it's better than having to start again #TheSims4 #iDrive

Accessibility heavily influences my choices—I use a screen reader full-time (#ScreenReader), so I prioritize services usable without sight (#InclusiveDesign, #DigitalAccessibility). Always open to discussing accessibility experiences or recommendations!
I've also experimented with:
I don't really have a media collection, so no Plex or Jellyfin here (#MediaServer)—but I'm always open to suggestions! I've gotten a bit addicted to exploring new self-hosted services! 😄
What's your setup like? Any cool services you'd recommend I try?

@zstg @afreytes my current problem with the #Filen test is that the #Android client doesn't seem to photo upload in the background. As soon as I open the app, it does a (so far) great job of the uploads but I have to load it every time, and there doesn't seem to be any background functionality.
I apparently bought a lifetime zero quota mobile only license for #iDrive a few years ago, it's not ideal for my needs but I will leave it on for on-the-fly phone backups at no cost or worry.
Weekly output: Qualcomm’s connected-home vision, BMW’s Panoramic iDrive, Zoox’s robotaxis, Delta at the Sphere, Better Offline, Red Bull Ford Powertrains
This would have been a long week with CES alone, but nine hours after my flight back from Vegas touched down at Dulles I was on my way into D.C. for ShmooCon. How could I not? I’ve learned an enormous amount since I first covered that security conference in 2019–and this weekend’s edition was the con’s final go-round.
1/6/2025: Qualcomm’s Smart Home Vision Includes TVs That Read Your ‘Emotional State’, PCMag
I got a head start on my CES coverage with this post I filed from home after getting embargoed copies of Qualcomm’s CES announcements.
1/8/2025: BMW Unveils Smartphone-Inspired Panoramic iDrive Dashboard, PCMag
I started Tuesday by going to the German automaker’s introduction of this driver interface, which featured comedians Tim Meadows and Ken Jeong leading a schtick in which they, the BMW executives onstage and those of us in the stands had all been shrunk down to about smartphone size.
1/8/2025: Taking a Robotaxi From Amazon-Owned Zoox for a Spin on the Vegas Strip, PCMag
My second stop in Vegas, after a quick check-in at my hotel, was to this robotaxi service’s offices to get a test ride in its autonomous vehicle–where I was delighted to see that the other journalist joining me in the car would be my long-ago Yahoo colleague Dan Howley. This became my second story datelined from Vegas this week after I needed clarification on a couple of points from Zoox.
1/8/2025: Delta Tips AI-Powered Concierge, In-Flight YouTube, More at Flashy CES Event, PCMag
The Delta Air Lines keynote introduced me to the Sphere, but only after getting to that venue reintroduced me to how utterly awful Vegas traffic can be during CES–the “Tech Express” shuttle needed more than 50 minutes to crawl the 1.3 miles from the Las Vegas Convention Center to the Venetian. The production values of Delta’s event were fantastic, but the substance of the announcements didn’t live up to that standard. Two aviation journalists who have covered the airline far longer than I have, Brett Snyder and Seth Miller, came away almost entirely unimpressed.
1/9/2025: Better Offline CES 2025: Day 4 – Pt. 2, Ed Zitron
Ed, a longtime tech publicist and more recent scourge of how growth-at-all-costs tech companies are ruining the digital world, invited me to join his podcast sometime when I was at CES, and I picked the last slot available–4:30 to 5 p.m. Thursday. Skip ahead to almost the 1:11 mark to hear my conversation with Ed and fellow CES journalists Ed Ongweso, Jr. and David Roth.
1/10/2025: Red Bull and Ford are building a new F1 hybrid race car engine—first as bits, then atoms, Fast Company
I started work on this piece months ago and then kept putting it off as I had other Fast Company projects with less flexible deadlines demand my attention first, then finally wrote and filed it the day after Christmas–just in time for it to get caught up in the publication’s winter break.

Anyone had good or bad experiences with #IDrive?
Installato Asahi Fedora Remix sul mio Mac Mini M1. Ho appena installato iDrive sto facendo il backup tramite terminale :) #fedora #idrive #fedora_asahi_remix
(Boost for awareness of this shitty situation.)
IDrive's got some explaining to do.
I moved from Amazon S3 to IDrive e2, about a month ago.
Yesterday I found that my buckets became inaccessible, either through their GUI or through the web.
This means:
- No Mastodon cache.
- No offsite WordPress backups. (They still happen on site.)
I've reported the problem yesterday using a GUI feature, but truth be told, this did not seem to create a ticket. I've emailed them this morning, and got a reply that a ticket was created.
This is complete and utter shit. I was over one year with Amazon S3, and *never* had any problem.
One month with IDrive e2, and I run into this shit.
@syntaxseed Oh geez, what a mess!
I've mostly stuck to #SpiderOak because I like that zero knowledge encryption is the default. I didn't think that #iDrive offers that level of encryption, but maybe that's what they mean by private key encryption? https://www.idrive.com/online-backup-security
@jackaponte 100%. In fact I found it to be so unresponsive even when it does launch that I was miles away from feeling like I can trust it to even backup my data. Not to mention that the web dashboard barely works and is very hidden on the #SpiderOak website. I also had problems getting it to take my payment. All signs of a product the company doesn't want to support anymore.
I switched to #iDrive after evaluating several options.
@joacim Men vad i h-vete?! 🤬 Det borde kanske "tutas ut" mer ...
Tur att det finns alternativ. Men det där är riktigt fult.

#timemachine worked again after about a week. I deliberately opened the files & folders that indicated that they needed to be downloaded (a cloud with a down arrow) to make it synch. That was a lot of clicking but seems to have accelerated getting all the files to #synch - in the sense of "come back to my machine" (as I said, the OS moved my stuff to the cloud / #idrive without me asking it to when I changed / #deleted a #local #user on my #macbook who was using the same #appleID )
