The Ornate snake #eel (Herpetoichthys regius, also known as the sea snake in #StHelena) is an eel in the family #Ophichthidae (worm/snake eels). It was described by #JohnRichardson in 1848, originally under the genus #Ophisurus. It is a #marine, #tropical eel which is known from the eastern #AtlanticOcean, including #Mauritania, St. Helena, and #India. It inhabits the #continentalShelf, where it forms burrows in sand sediments. Males can reach a maximum #totalLength of 90 centimetres (35 in).
