I don't think that "league" has ever been a particularly precise unit. I was in two minds as I wrote it as to whether to add "Circa" - LOL

Uncertainty propagation using the Monte Carlo method can be demanding in terms of computational resources.

A team at PTB has developed an efficient alternative: the systematic sampling propagation and reconstruction convolution (SSPRC).

@wisegreyowl

Imagine what multi-purpose and useful plants they would be if they could grow up to 45 meters.

They could be all types: ammeters, speedometers, voltmeters, pedometers, odometers, tachometers, anemometers, barometers, thermometers, or even gasometers.

A metrological bounty at harvest-tide.

• BURGER is the first global IDF data set derived from observations of sub-daily rainfall
• Sub-daily rainfall intensities are computed with the Simplified Metastatistical Extreme Value (SMEV) approach for a range of return periods
• BURGER intensities compare well with expected intensities, indicated by an interquartile range of the percentage bias between −5% and 5%..”

I'm preparing material for a lab on weather next week and I found this image. People will do anything to avoid using units.

#meteorology #metrology #weather #UVic

A TV weather broadcaster is pointing to a list of wind speeds called, "Trash Can Wind Meter". The speeds are:

Lid flipped over
Tipped over
In the neighbour's yard
Down the Street
I've lost my trash can

Tipped over is highlighted.

@RnDanger
Exactly! The huge range in definitions of a 'league' by different cultures at different times is presumably why people stopped using it.
In any case, its use in the title of the film was completely nonsensical. :-)
cf. "The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms" - not quite as ludicrous at only 3x Challenger Deep. 😬

This afternoon, my kid checked out the book "One Stop Science: Experiments with a Ruler" from the library. Sadly, it appears to be less of #metrology for kids, but more general experiments that can be done with a ruler or other flat stick.

I hope you'll allow me to toot my own horn for a mo. I recently signed a contract to work part-time as the sci-comm specialist for a metrology (measurement science) lab here in AoNZ. I've had standalone projects with this lab for years, and I love working with them. I'm a trained metrologist myself!

This new contract is giving me the chance to think strategically / long-term and to be a bit more ambitious. And it's paying off. Yesterday, we had a big media day.

The lab director appeared on breakfast TV to talk about the importance of measurement. Her interview was great, and was interspersed with lovely B-roll of the lab filmed by the show's local producer.

Then she appeared on a very popular national radio show for a more in-depth conversation about international cooperation and measurement.

I made both of these interviews happen 😊 And the comment I've had from everyone at the lab is "we've never had opportunities like this before".

This lab is part of a larger organization that has basically ignored them in terms of comms support. That's why I kept getting parachuted in for stuff, but they weren't allowed to formally 'hire' me. Changes in the science system mean that the lab is moving out of that organization, so the director decided it was the perfect time to bring me in.

I'm very happy that they did!

I'll continue to work for myself for the majority of the time, but this contract feels like an anchor point that I didn't know I needed. I have so many ideas for things we, as a lab, can do. I'm determined to show the team that I'm a safe pair of hands. I'm feeling really good today.

Note:

1. It's not the metric system. It hasn't been since 1960 when it was renamed the SI (Système international d'unités). It was not just renaming but a change to an internationally agreed (yes, including the US), coherent system.

2. Everyone uses SI. Even those who insist on measuring, for example, in miles. A mile is *only* defined in terms of SI i.e. 1 mile = 1609.344 m (international, the US survey mile is 1609.347... the lb etc. are similarly defined in terms of the SI).
