#FolkloreMoment : Once, the dike next to the river Weser burst at Rechtenfleth, and the locals labored for several seasons to repair it - but the hole never seemed to fill up, no matter how much sand they poured into it.

Then they asked a wise woman for advice. She told them: "You will labor until Judgment Day if you don't appease the Heavens. Grab the first person to pass by the next morning, throw them into the depths, and construct the dike above them."

The first person who passed by was a rich, prideful farmer named Heuer. Then they grabbed him, threw him into the hole, and built the dike above him like the wise woman said. The ground bekame solid, and the dike was soon completed with God's aid.

But the dike was called "Heuer's Dike" since then, and it is said that during quiet nights there is groaning and wailing in the depths at this site.

The Afsluitdijk seperates the inland from the North Sea in the Netherlands. On the left lies the IJsselmeer, previously known as Zuiderzee. It was cut off from the North Sea by the Afsluitdijk dyke built in 1932 and about 45% of the former sea was reclaimed as polders. Presently it is a vast shallow freshwater lake (up to 4-5 m depth) and the largest freshwater basin in the country.

Interesting #boulders in a roughly stacked #seawall
The southern part of the spit separating #Plymouth Harbor from Plymouth Bay has a seawall along the outer shore, above Plymouth #LongBeach. Without knowing where they came from, interpreting the boulders is sketchy. BUT nice coarse crystals in intrusions into #felsic rocks, including big #quartz chunks (top right photo) and blades of #biotite (bottom right).

Plymouth bay is on the Massachusetts coast between Boston and Cape Cod. The spit protecting Plymouth Harbor (lower right) is about 4 km long.

A vein bearing large grayish quartz crystals in a fine grained ground mass intrudes into felsic rock, sunglasses for scale.

A view southward along Plymouth Long Beach, with the varied boulders of the seawall at right.

A plagioclase-rich vein with large blade-shaped biotite crystals, with an example being indicated by Karen’s finger.

The feature sure looked like a #dike on #satellite view, and a ground check confirmed it. Probably a late #Triassic or early #Jurassic intrusion into #Proterozoic Dedham #Granite, as #Pangea rifted. At Black Rock #Beach, #Hingham, #Massachusetts, #NewEngland #geology USA.
