“HIGHLIGHTS:
• ViT-based forest mask, multispectral ensemble LandTrendr and terrain shadow mask.
• District-level RF/XGBoost model training with expert-weighted validation.
• Outperformed GFC and REDD + AI benchmarks in accuracy and F1 performance.
• RF excelled in High Mountains/Himalayas; XGBoost in the lower Mountain regions.
• NBR contributed the most; snow-impacted forest loss uncertainty was observed..."

Monday is the start of the summer school in #digital #palaeography which I run in Göttingen every summer. We have 16 amazing international students and 2 weeks to play with #medieval fragments, #multispectral imaging, network analysis, bookbindings, biocodicology and much much more, topped off by a trip to the fabulous @hab_wf and a hackathon. It's the absolute highlight of my year. Follow this year's posts and photos via #SummerSchool25. @histodons @medievodons @historikerinnen

Over the past week, we've conducted drone surveys at archaeological sites in Sinarcas, Caudete de las Fuentes, Ademuz, and Moixent, using #multispectral and #LiDAR sensors. A big thank you to the #NTNU University Museum for their invaluable support, particularly to Professor Ole Risbøl and Magnar Mojaren Gran for their expertise. Through this collaboration, we’ve had the opportunity to learn from their extensive knowledge, enhancing our skills and understanding while working with these methods.

Revealing #palimpest with #multispectral #imaging! These amazing results, showing a #Merovingian overtext and a 5th-century Gospel undertext, were achieved by my colleague Alex Zawacki at Göttingen. I'll be presenting the full results of this and other cool discoveries in May at a German-language conference in Kiel.

Part of a medieval manuscript, set on its side, with the two lines of the overtext in 2 vertical lines on the left, and 6 lines of faintly brown undertext running horizontally across the image.

A false-color #multispectral photo I took of a larkspur with UV and IR light mapped on top of a regular visible-color photo. Inner parts of the flower petals reflect more UV than others and thus show up in blue. Other parts absorb UV but reflect IR, resulting in the red colors seen in the inner part of the flower and stems. Many flowers use this contrast to help pollinators (who often can see UV) to distinguish key parts of the flower.

My first image from my hacked-together #multispectral (IR, UV, and visible light) camera. Near IR is in red, visible light is in green, and UV is in blue.

The camera itself is a monochrome camera I normally use for solar imaging, while the lens is just a regular Nikon 50 f/1.8D. Between the two is an electronic filter wheel with IR pass, IR cut, and UV pass filters.

Project 2, supervised by @fbenitez.bsky.social:

Identification of native vegetation species by linking UAV imagery with terrestrial spectroradiometers

This project will develop accurate and efficient spatial data science methods to classify and monitor native vegetation species in subtropical regions from #UAV #multispectral #imagery and field #spectrometer data.
