Widespread Seismic Tremor in Greenland’s Fjords
S32B-08 17Dec, 356 CC 11:40-11:50
(with Yajing Liu & @natalyagomez)
Water (and heat) transport through Greenland's glacial fjords to tidewater glaciers is sparsely measured. They find seismic tremor from coastal, land-based seismometers corresponds to modelled periods of turbulent water flow and standing eddies in these fjords.

Peak Glacier Extinction In The Mid-Twenty-First Century
--

“📉 KEY FINDINGS
• At +4 °C, only ~18,000 glaciers remain worldwide by 2100
• At +1.5 °C, ~100,000 glaciers survive
• [They] identif[ed] “Peak Glacier Extinction”:
– ~2041 at +1.5 °C (~2,000 glaciers lost per year)
– ~2055 at +4 °C (~4,000 glaciers lost per year)
🏔️ THE ALPS
• At +2.7 °C, only ~110 glaciers remain by 2100.
• At +4 °C, this drops to just ~20.
Can you imagine the Alps with almost no glaciers left?...”

Ice Sheets Without Dynamic Topography

(Natalya Gomez's group at #McGillUniversity)
Dynamic topography is a deviation from isostatic equilibrium driven by mantle flow. Modelling results suggest that the choice of a dynamic topography model may be as important as the choice of climate model when simulating paleo ice sheet configurations of the last 5 million years.

Glacier melt feeds rivers that nourish forests, wetlands, farms and cities. But with shrinking ice, seasonal rhythms change and water availability becomes unpredictable for people and wildlife alike. On International Mountain Day, we celebrate the richness and fragility of mountain ecosystems and spotlight the need for climate action, habitat protection, and respect for the cultures tied to these heights.

Greenhouse gases projected to sharply increase extreme flooding in Central Himalayas
Rising #GreenhouseGas #emissions could see the size of extreme f#loods in the Central #Himalaya's increase by between as much as 73% and 84% by the end of this century.
Geographers at Durham University, UK, simulated the risk of increased flooding on the Karnali River, which spans #Nepal and #China and has the potential to impact communities in Nepal and #India.
They found that extreme floods—those with a 1% chance of happening within a year—could increase in size by 22% and 26% between 2020 and 2059, compared to flooding seen in the region between 1975 and 2014.
This increase is expected to be 37–43% between 2060 and 2099 with medium greenhouse gas emissions. High greenhouse gas emissions could see the size of extreme floods increase by between 73% and 84% in the same period.

COP30 information in the Cryosphere pavilion about Antarctica.
One of the speakers is Matt England, the bold guy when you scrub through the video. He speaks about the decline in bottom water formation, and how this affects ocean oxygen content everywhere. Also compares the speed in decline to that of the #AMOC : the Southern decline is double the speed.
Formation occurs right at the edges of Antarctica landmass.
At the surface, dense water is supposed to form when sea ice leaves behind cold, saline = dense water.
This then feeds a waterfall into the deep abyss, from where it gets transported around the continent and into all ocean basins.
But because #seaice formation at the 4 main edge-action points is hindered by multiple causes, the waterfall into the abyss gets less and less water.
When this deep circulation stops, when, not IF, it has disastrous consequences for the ocean life forms and for humanity at the end of the food chain.
The talk before Matt's is about #Antarctica seaice in general – not at those 4 main action points at the edge of the landmass.
"It flickers, then it tips", came to mind again. The loss in 2023 was the size of Argentina. Or Greenland.
For statistics buffs: a 7 sigma change.
Albedo loss is huge and now on par with Albedo loss from the Arctic sea ice loss.
And Antarctic loss now continues even once CO2-zero has been reached.
