#illumos #omnios is absolutely incredible. The system is very well designed IMO, I had already experienced the more cohesively designed #BSD but here it feels a bit *more* (although quite similar in some aspects to #freebsd of course).

Linux feels like a duct-taped amalgamation of random ideas, don't get me wrong I love Linux and all it represents, but it's a system that has been grown in any direction.

With Illumos instead it feels like you have orthogonal powerful building blocks you can compose into something greater than the sum of its parts. #zfs #dtrace #zones #crossbow it all works beautifully, both on their own and together.

After seeing how virtualized networking can be done in solaris, the docker networking stack feels so sad in comparison.

So far I'm very impressed.

One of the big successes of #Sun was that they basically declared a unilateral "ceasefire" in terms of #IP & #Patents re: #OpenSource. Whereas Oracle didn't seem willing to honour that.

• Without that cooperative atmosphere we saw #OpenOffice devs literally forking off into @libreoffice and projects like #illumos and @openzfs scramble to save what was OpenSource'd and also rescue that.

Obviously #Linux with it's #GPLv2only-Kernel and most of it's Userland could not get 'closed-sourced' like #OpenSolaris which instantly got stomped out by Oracle as they wanted to sqeeze #Solaris for profits and milk their clients in typical Oracle fashion...

• Which is sad because #competition breeds #innovation and a lot of stuff like #Zones in Solaris really were at their time really forcing #KVM, #bhyve and #BSDjails to up their game for good.

Now granted, I do know someone who for most of their life made their money dealing with the intricacies of setting up #postfix, #sendmail and #courier #MailServers on Solaris and if I ask said person about that they give me a kilometer stare, so OFC like a #SysV - #Unix systems Solaris and #SunOS really are one of the reasons #WindowsNT won the "#WorkstationWar" and why - if anyone - #Apple won the last "#UnixWar"...

• Still I do am sad that I declined that #sysadmin position at a leading research center I'm not at liberty to name and I do know there's OFC still some critical infrastructure running even older Solaris servers...

In Kdenlive, "zones" refers to a specific regions of a clip that can be used for editing or rendering.

The beginning of a zone is set by pressing the "I" key (in-point), and the end of a zone is set by pressing the "O" key (out-point).

You can also use the "Monitor → Set Zone In" and "Monitor → Set Zone Out" in the menu options.

"Shift-I" inserts the zone into the project bin.

Lu : "De grandes dents" par Lucile Novat chez #Zones. Petit livre rapide et paradoxalement ludique qui se résume en une phrase : ce n'est pas dans les bois que le Petit Chaperon Rouge se fait dévorer (mais dans une maison familiale, dans une chambre, dans un lit, pour être explicite). Pas mal du tout et proche du sens premier de Perrault ! Je l'ajoute à mon dossier "interprétation des contes".
