Upgraded my main workstation from #Fedora40 to #Fedora42. Smooth experience overall, with just a couple of quirks:
1. Globally installed #Python packages haven't survived the upgrade and had to be re-installed
2. The latest version of #Fedora that #veracrypt publishes a package for is 40. This was the main reason I didn't upgrade to #fedora41. But version 40 got too close to EOL, so I had to learn how to build VeraCrypt from source code.

1. Main Documents folder on PC SSD, with almost 280GB (around 100k files) to somehow keep.
Of these, few less than 110GB are those mandatory to be kept (photos, emails, docs, books, ...).

2. First full backup level on an external USB disk encrypted with #VeraCrypt.
Files are synced from (1) with #RoboCopy each 42 😇 modifications.
Disk always connected to PC, not automatically mounted.

Why you should use full-disk encryption

If any of the arguments I make below apply to you, you should use full-disk encryption. I am pretty sure the first argument applies to everyone. The second argument applies at least to everyone in the EU and the US state of California. The third argument applies to everyone again.

You will fail to delete drives properly

Storage media get lost. Most people do not know how to properly delete hard disk content before selling them, or they forget it. In the case of flash drives, or SSDs, standard tools like shred don't work. hdparm may do the trick, but this is not well known. If you are lucky, the manufacturer of you SSH provides a Windows app that lets you delete it securely. Your server does not run on Windows of course.

The law demands it

#GDPR and similar data protection and privacy laws require you to store no #PII (personal data) permanently. You have to anonymize PII or delete it after a few weeks. IP addresses are PII. All servers store IP addresses by default. The GDPR also demands that you use state-of-the-art technology to protect sensitive data. Full disk encryption is the state of the art.

Law enforcement makes "mistakes"

I'm a board member of @Artikel5eV, an organisation that runs relays on the Tor network, including exit relays. Running Tor relays is perfectly legal in Germany. Nevertheless, law enforcement agencies have raided the homes of Artikel 5 e.V. board members twice. Illegally so, as a court confirmed recently. I won't run Tor relays in my home, but there is a good chance that my home will be raided one day unless all police officers and prosecutors decide to obey the law.

There is also a possibility that the rule of law might collapse in your country sooner or later. We are just witnessing it in the USA.

You already mentioned that ordinary thieves can also be a problem.

Encryption is available for free

So what is your case against disk encryption? It is obvious that it alone does not solve all IT security issues, but it is an important building block. #LUKS is reliable free and open-source software for HD encryption. If you are not using Linux, check out #VeraCrypt. The Raspberry Pi 5 comes with hardware acceleration for AES, so there no longer is a noticeable performance penalty for encryption.

Anyone know of a good tutorial to add #Veracrypt/#Luks to an existing install of #Debian/#Proxmox that does NOT require formatting a device and creating partitions on it?

I'm looking for something that can self encrypt existing drives (whole) like how Veracrypt works on Windows with full disk encryption.

And no - I'm not interested in encrypting specific VMs, i want the whole thing to be encrypted as the physical Hypervisor will reside in an untrusted location.

For Linux, MacOS (and Windows) you could us #VeraCrypt

But as it requires software (AFAIR you don't need to install anything) so I don't think it works on iOS/iPadOS.

And I fear that there can't be a solution for iOS/iPadOS which isn't Apple sanctioned (and therefore probably doesn't work on Linux)

@elbekai Kann ich empfehlen, auch, wenn man nur einen Ordner auf dem Rechner verschlüsseln will. Ist da besser als Veracrypt, weil leichter zu bedienen. Man könnte auch #Veracrypt zum Verschlüsseln nehmen und den verschlüsselten Ordner dann in der Cloud ablegen, aber bei meinem Versuch, sie zu synchronisieren, bin ich mit Veracrypt bei Nextcloud gescheitert, weil nicht erkannt wurde, dass es Änderungen im verschlüsselten Ordner gab. Bei Cryptomator war das kein Problem.
