Getting Started On Diagramming This Project’s Workflow, ‘Old School’

Couple of 10s of pages of data inventory, roles and responsibilities, even the start of a RACI, pot of good black tea – now time to get started on diagramming this project’s workflow, components, interim data products, R&R, development and more #oldschoool, ready for full team involvement – ‘helpers’ notwithstanding!

Spatial Data – Right At Your Fingertips!

Sometimes when you are working, you realise what a truly long way we have come in terms of readily accessible spatial data…
I am looking at remote sensed data in Alaska, both the imagery and the elevation-derived hydrology, on a pseudo-randomly-selected sand bar that maybe no one has ever stood on, just to the east of Noatak National Park – and yet I can get an excellent sense of the hydrology, sedimentology, geomorphology, even the ecology…

Consolidated Standardized Survey-Grade Checkpoints 3DEP 2010 to 2017 [USGS]
--
sciencebase.gov/catalog/item/6
--
“One of the key aspects of 3DEP data is that data is verified by a collection of certified survey-grade GNSS checkpoints spread throughout each project. These points have always been available but were difficult to find and not standardized. [The USGS] have collated and standardized almost 42,000 of these checkpoints and are making them available for other uses. These points here in this first phase span from 2010-2017, but [the USGS] are in the process of making these available for all [their] projects, and hope to enable them in different ways in the future...”

Maps showing the improved alignment possible in the 3D Hydrography Program by using hydrography data derived from high-quality elevation data from the 3D Elevation Program (3DEP). The example maps show topography and streams near the border between Skagit and Snohomish Counties in Washington.map - Example of hydrography derived from 3DEP lidar data for a section of the Marshyhope Creek near Federalsburg, Maryland.Block diagram showing elevation data being collected over natural and human-made environments. Built using high- resolution 3D Elevation Program and 3D Hydrography Program data, the 3D National Topography Model (3DNTM) will incorporate other critical landscape information such as landcover, structures, transportation, and geology to inform a comprehensive understanding of the landscape to enable data-driven decisions and science. The 3DNTM aspires to augment today’s airborne-acquired elevation data with data acquired from a variety of platforms including satellite, drone, and potentially others. Hydrography data for lakes, rivers, and reservoirs will be derived from that elevation data to form an integrated representation of the landscape that can be connected with other water features such as wetlands and groundwater.Digial elevation model of USGS site 365149109492300 Laguna Creek below Dennehotso near Kayenta, AZ.

Blow-Me-Down Brook, NH – An NHD Flowline Picked ‘Randomly’
--
npshistory.com/brochures/saga/ <-- 1981 NPS guide
--
usgs.gov/3d-hydrography-progra <-- USGS’s 3DHP home page

I am working on some hydroaddressing / network traversing technical approaches for 3DHP – and needed an example of a multisegment flowline in NHD-sourced dataset, and so ‘randomly’ got this one - Blow-Me-Down, NH, from WBD HUC4-0108.
Although we map so many flowlines (~20 million in the USA for NHD-sourced spatial data, estimated 10x that for the EDH data still to be determined across the USA), I like trying to understand what a flowline or waterbody ‘is’ to the people on the ground as much as I can...
